Scientist Peyton Westlake develops a synthetic skin which he hopes can be used for burn victims. However his lab is attacked by a gang of mobsters in the employ of ruthless industrialist Louis Strack, Jr., and is badly burned in the process. After recovering, Westlake uses the synthetic skin to make masks of his assailants in order to get revenge against the villains, turning into the vigilante known as Darkman.
